Remember A Charity Week

11th-17th September 2023

Remember a Charity Week. This week, like every week, we are supporting charities, but this week is a special one.

So we’ve asked Anna Webster, Legacy & In Memoriam Officer, from CancerCare North Lancashire and South Cumbria, to write us a short blog to tell us what our donations and yours mean to them.

Anna Webster. Legacy & In Memoriam Officer, CancerCare

Anna tells us:

“As a local charity, CancerCare are extremely grateful for the support of Morecambe Bay Wills & Estates as we strive to provide much-needed support to local people coping with cancer or bereavement. Thank you to Nicola & the team for inviting us to contribute to this special guest blog.

This week is ‘Remember A Charity Week’; a campaign that encourages everyone to take a moment to consider adding a gift to a charity in their Will.

Gifts in Wills are vital to the work of CancerCare; funding the support we provide to 1 in every 4 people who turn to the charity for help.  When you include a gift in your Will to CancerCare, you help ensure that no-one in our local community ever has to face cancer or bereavement alone”

Q: That sounds great, but what about my family and friends?

Of course, we understand that when making a Will, the needs of your family and loved ones will always come first. After all, a huge part of our work at CancerCare is supporting families.

However, once you’ve looked after those closest to you, including a gift to CancerCare in your Will can help many more people. It can ensure future generations across North Lancashire & South Cumbria can always turn to us for support.

Q: Do I have to give a large amount to charity in my Will?

We are grateful for every gift in every Will, whether you can afford to give 1% or 50% of your estate. What may seem like a relatively small gift to you, can still make a big difference to someone in our community coping with the life-changing impact of cancer or loss. And, of course, lots of smaller gifts can add up and have a real difference on the number of local people we can help.

Previous larger gifts have helped to fund new projects like bringing CancerCare’s support services to the Barrow & Furness community. And smaller gifts have helped to fund weekly creative support groups for people in the Lancaster & Morecambe area.

Q: Is it true that leaving a gift to charity can reduce your inheritance tax?

Yes. If you leave more than 10% of your estate to charity in your Will then the overall rate of inheritance tax paid can reduce from 40% to 36%. That’s good news for your loved ones and great for charities like CancerCare too! And you can do this any week, not just in “Remember A Charity Week”.

Q: How do I add a gift to my Will?

Option 1: If you’ve already written a Will, you can ask your Will-writer if they can update it with a codicil.

Option 2: Write a new Will. Your Will-writer will guide you through the process. If you’d like to include a gift in your Will for CancerCare, you’ll need to give your Will-writer the following information.
